Helping Children Feel Safe, Seen, and Secure

When I was four years old, I was on a boat at Fallen Leaf Lake with five other children under the age of ten and two fathers. A wake hit our boat, causing it to go down. In that moment, all I could do was grab my dad around the neck. I knew he would get me to the shore, and he swam us both to safety.

This experience highlights a fundamental truth: all children need to feel safe, seen, and secure.

  •  To feel safe means knowing their physical needs for shelter, food, water, and sleep are met, alongside their psychological needs for unconditional love, belonging, autonomy, and independence.

  •  To feel seen means knowing they are valued for exactly who they are. Children must feel free to express their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, knowing there is space for them. This creates the secure attachment that forms the foundation for all future social relationships.

  •  To feel secure requires a predictable, stable environment with consistent routines. This protects children from chronic stress and gives them the confidence to explore. Furthermore, when parents can emotionally regulate themselves, it helps provide the stability kids need to experience true security.

At Shore Crest Counseling, we support children, parents, and families as they navigate the path to feeling safe, seen, and secure. Please reach out for a consultation to see if Shore Crest Counseling is the right fit for your family.
